DNA Sequencing

The DNA Facility at the University of Iowa houses an Applied Biosystems Model 3730 (48-capillary) and a Model 3730xl (96-capillary) DNA Sequencer and offers DNA sequencing on a fee-for-service basis to investigators. The service is not funded through any granting agencies or subsidized by any departments within the university. However, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center provides partial subsidy for the benefit of its members. As such, HCCC members receive special compensation in the form of reduced fees for DNA sequencing services. All operational costs, including reagents, enzymes, labor and maintenance contracts must be recovered exclusively through service charges. At the same time, all charges have been established with the recognition that fees must be competitive with costs for manual radioactive sequencing methods and be economically practical for research laboratories operating under tight budgets. This facility is committed to making state-of-the-art DNA sequencing technology available to the university research community at the lowest possible cost.

DNA Sequencing Fees (cost per reaction):

* Individual Tube: $9.75/reaction
* Plate-Core performs chemistry: $6.50*/reaction (no reruns)
* Plate-User performs chemistry: $2.25*/reaction (no reruns)
*Plate submissions will be charged in multiples of 48 reactions. For example 1-48 reactions submitted in a plate format (core performs chemistry) will be charged $312 and 49 to 96 will be charged $624.

The sequencing service of the DNA Facility is located in:

* Room 300H Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB)
* Phone: (319)335-6736 FAX: (319)335-6737
The sequencing service is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM M-F. Samples for sequencing may be dropped off anytime during these hours.
